June

PUENTEAREAS

Pontevedra Province - June 1 - "Fiesta del Corpus Christi".

Located 46 kms. from Pontevedra; ancient palace and monastery; remnants of fortress.
A week prior to fiesta, town is divided into two "teams", in preparation for flower carpet contest. At midday on June 1 - procession reveals carpets; visitors may see them hours before that, from balconies of houses, open especially for that purpose. Popular songs.

SAN LORENZO DE SABRUCEDO - LA ESTRADA

Pontevedra Province - June 18-20 - "A rapa das bestas".

Located 40 kms. from Pontevedra and 23 kms. from Santiago; Romanesque Churches, viaduct, Medieval tower, etc. Lovely scenery by Ulla River.
The fiesta has three phases :
1."A baixa das bestas" - bringing the wild mares down from the hill to the herd.
2."0 curro o a rapa" - trimming mares and selecting those for sale.
3."A solta" - returning the rest to mountains for another year.

July

PONTEVEDRA

July 11 - "Fiestas de San Benitino de Lerez".

Located 655 kms. from Madrid; museums; Gothic Church of Santa Maria; ruins of Santo Domingo Convent; fine views of Bias Bajas; beaches.
Festivities consist of pilgrimage along river; image of San Benitino; "gaitas" and Galician songs only; traditional dress. Later - feasting, singing and dancing; fireworks.

RIBADEO

Lugo Province - August 6-8 - "Romeria de '" Santa Cruz".

Located 107 kms. from Lugo, on Cantabrian coast, on Eo River; Santa Cruz watchtower; trading port; 18th century "colegiata"; beaches in surroundings; fishing for salmon and trout.
Pilgrimage to Santa Cruz Mountain, 11/2 km. from Ribadeo, to monument of "Gaitero Gallego" (Galician piper]. Bagpi.pe music only; musical competitions.

FOZ

Lugo Province - August 8-12 - "Fiestas Patronales de San Lorenzo".

Located 95 kms. from Lugo; sea-faring village, summer resort with fine beaches; 4 kms. away - Romanesque Basilica of San Martin de Mondonedo.
Fiesta in honour of Patron Saint San Lorenzo; procession with image of saint through streets and typical fishermen's quarter, to sea shore; profusely garlanded boat continues on maritime procession. Also pilgrimage, nautical contests, canoes on Masma River, nautical competitions, flower games, dance contests, artistic, folk-loristic and cultural events.

BSTANZOS

La Coruna Province - August 14-25 - "Fiestas patro-nales de San Roque".

Located 23 kms. from La Coruna, on river of same name; fine panoramic views; hunting and fishing.
River trip on decorated floats; traditional dances by members of ancient guilds; raising of gigantic, monumental globe.

SADA

La Coruna Province - August 15-18 - "Fiestas Pat-ronales de San Roque".

Located 17 kms. from La Coruna; pleasant summer resort on Sada River; important fishing port; sport-fishing; nice scenery and beaches.
Main festivity; typical "sardinada" - authentic Galician fair, with folklore contests, stalls offering free typical dishes - "sardinas asadas"; raising of paper globe, regatas, swimming competitions, fireworks and float parades.

VIVERO

Lugo Province - August 27-31 - "Romeria del Naseiro".

Located 96 kms. from Lugo, on wide estuary of Cantabrian coast; important port, fine beaches; fishing for trout and salmon in Landro and Sor Rivers; Romanesque Church of Santa Maria del Campo; Churches of San Pedro and Santiago; Valdeflores Convent; Plateresque castle gate.
Festivities begin with street singing of regional Galician songs, followed by walk to Naseiro where musical concerts are held; Mass and traditional procession; festive meal accompanied by regional music. On final day - fair with frying and eating of fresh fish.

MONDONEDO

Lugo Province - October 17-20 -"Las ferias y fiestas de San Lucas".

Located 61 kms. from Lugo, Mondonedo was one of the capitals of the former Kingdom of Galicia; Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral; Medieval streets.
Feria preserves Medieval character; includes sale of local ceramics, wood and wicker work, honey, ironware, etc. One of most ancient festivals in Galicia, keeping traditional customs; interesting gastronomy.


Festivals In the center city of La Coruna take place during the entire month of August.
Festivals in Santiago de Compostela take place on May 11; July 15-31; Dec. 30.
