QUICK GUIDE TO SPANISH
PRONUNCIATION
Spanish vowels are pronounced purely and simply, except for the u, which is mute in the combinations qui, que, gui and gue. Spanish b and v are pronounced alike, with a sound closer to the b sound. The c is pronounced hard before a, o and u, and given a sound like a lisp (th) before i and e. The g is sounded like a very harsh h before e and i and the j always receives this sounding. The z is always pronounced like English th. Combinations of letters include double 11, pronounced like the Italian gl, and rr, pronounced with an extra trilling effect. The sound of Italian gn is reached with a ñ. Accent is generally on the penultimate syllable, except where marked with an acute accent.
