PLACES TO VISIT
Any meaning to be derived from the sites of Jerusalem must be based on some
knowledge of its history. But more than the raw material of facts one needs an
imagination alive enough to grasp the texture of vanished societies from gutted
ruins or restored shrines that hardly resemble their former shapes.
The story of Jerusalem is still unfolding as archaeologists excavate new sites,
new - often contradictory - light is thrown on old ``facts.'' Some of the sites
around which tourists are shown aren't always what some claim and other believe
them to be.
Nonetheless, the very stones form a genuine link with antiquity and serve to
remind visitors of events which in most cases undoubtedly occurred, albeit
perhaps in locations other than those pointed out. An asterisk indicates that
the site is within the Old City. See coloured maps on Southern Sheet. We have
also indicated the numbers of the walks and the bus routes that lead to the
site or pass near it.
