EN GEV
Founded in 1937, En Gev was the first settlement on the eastern shore of
the Sea of Galilee.
As you exit from En Gev, notice the steep, saddle- shaped, 350 m.-high
mountain facing the gate. It is known as Susita, a Hebrew translation of the
Greek name for it - Hippos (horse). Many ruins at its base, and especially on
the summit, date from Greek and Roman times. However, the 7th-century Moslem
invaders destroyed much here and an earthquake did the rest. Until 1967 there
was a border post at the top. It will take you about 45 minutes to climb to the
summit up the spiralling footpath.
Water-sports facilities are offered at nearby Hof Golan, Luna Gal. Five
kilometres north of En Gev is Kursi, a national park at the site of the miracle
of the Gadarene swine. Main attraction is a partially reconstructed Byzantine
church and chapel.
