ROSH PINNA
This small moshava, set on the slopes of Mt. Canaan, has preserved its
rural atmosphere since it was founded in 1882.
Its name derives from the Hebrew for ``cornerstone,'' as it was the first
Jewish settlement in recent times in the Galilee.
Restored early pioneer houses and the synagogue can be visited, and the
town is a pleasant spot for a leisurely stroll. For details of the restoration
work, phone (06)936603.
The first Jew to be hanged by the British Mandatory authorities, Shlomo
Ben-Yosef, is buried here. A memorial stone stands near the highway (No. 89) to
Zefat.
Turn left up the main Rosh Pinna Street and climb the mountain road (No.
89). You will be able to pull over at an observation point near the Shlomo
Ben-Yosef Memorial, for a view of the plain between the Sea of Galilee and the
Hula Valley, backed by the Bashan and Golan mountains.
The road continues to weave and twist, rising all the time through
invigorating mountain scenery. After 8 km. the road goes straight on for Akko.
You should branch off left to Zefat.
