Italians are world‑famous for their
animation and expressiveness in daily speech. Perhaps the very nature of the
Italian language, with its many varied stresses, contributes to these traits in
the Italian national character.
There are two accents in Italian:
grave (á) and acute (á). Here are two rules to follow for the correct accent of
syllables:
1. Stress the vowel that bears grave
or acute accent.
2. If the word has no printed
accent, stress the next‑tolast syllable:
Remember –
Grave accent on e and o (é, ó) indicates
an open vowel:
Acute accent (é, ó) indicates a closed
vowel.
